Bucket Bill
Bucket Bill is worked bottom up in rounds. You start with a double folded brim before working the sides and top of the hat. Finally, the hat is felted in the washing machine for the desired result.
The head circumference can vary greatly from person to person. The measurements given here are generally intended for women, but can also fit children and men. It is also possible to adjust the circumference of the hat through felting. If you knit the smallest size and felt a little stronger, you can get a hat for a smaller head size than the instruction says. Likewise, you can knit the largest size, felt it a little less and get a hat that fits a larger head circumference than the instruction says. Feel free to try out a little! The following describes how to use the gauge swatch and felting to get the hat to the size you want. Here it is possible to achieve sizes from 1 year to adult men.
Yarn: Friends Wool by Hobbii (double thread)
Amount of yarn: 5 skeins (for all sizes) + yarn for gauge swatch(es).
Sizes: Head circumference 55-56 cm (57-58 cm) 59-60 cm. A more detailed description of the sizes can be found in the instruction, as well as different methods of adjusting the sizes through gauge swatches and felting. Bucket Bill can be adjusted, so that it fits kids from 1 year (49-50 cm) to male adults (63-64 cm).
Gauge: Before felting: 16 stitches x 25 rows = 10 x 10 cm. After felting: 18 stitches x 30 rows = 10 x 10 cm.
Recommended needles: Circular needle 6 mm (40 cm). Dpns 6 mm. Remember that the needle size is just a recommendation. Knit a gauge swatch first!
NOTE! Felting is not an exact science and the result depends on several factors. Depending on which washing machine and/or which washing program is used or even with which other garment the hat is washed, the result can vary.
